About Us

Our Invitation to Community

We read this at the beginning of most of our gatherings.
It captures what everyone is invited to experience at The Refuge together.

The Refuge is a mission center and Christian community dedicated to helping hurting and hungry people find faith, hope, and dignity alongside each other.

We love to throw parties, tell stories, find hope, and practice the ways of Jesus as best we can.

We're all hurt or hungry in our own ways.

We're at different places on our journey but we share a guiding story,
a sweeping epic drama called the Bible.

We find faith as we follow Jesus and share a willingness to honestly wrestle with God and our questions and doubts.

We find dignity as God's image-bearers and strive to call out
that dignity in one another.

We all receive, we all give.

We are old, young, poor, rich, conservative, liberals, single, married, gay, straight, evangelicals, progressives, book-smart, street-smart,
certain, doubting, hurting, thriving.

Yet Christ's love binds our differences together in unity.

At The Refuge, everyone is safe, but no one is comfortable.

OUR VALUES

We center our community's life around our shared values of
Presence, Engagement, Transformation, Welcome, Creativity, and Celebration

PRESENCE /
  • Showing up authentically as we are, owning our stories, and allowing ourselves to belong.
  • Walking with each other as fellow strugglers and seekers of Christ’s hope.
  • Following Jesus’ example of giving and receiving.
ENGAGEMENT /
  • Serving and advocating for people in need, especially those who have been forgotten, oppressed or marginalized.
  • Dialoging with each other and with others in the midst of differences and opinions and beliefs.
  • Collaborating with other faith communities, government agencies, and nonprofit organizations to serve others and cultivate unity together.
  • Protecting what is good and restoring what is broken in God’s creation.
TRANSFORMATION /
  • Seeing God—Three in One—as the source and center of all we are and all we do.
  • Wrestling with our questions, doubts, and dreams in humility and authenticity as we grow in our relationship with God, others, and ourselves.
  • Healing and recovering from past hurts, unhealthy patterns, and distorted images of God.
  • Honoring the Bible as our story—God’s words for us as the living text of our Christian faith, knowing we all may interpret the Scriptures differently.
WELCOME /
  • Welcoming everyone with love, dignity, and hospitality as best we can.
  • Practicing equality in our experiences and leadership, where each person’s voice and gifts are welcomed and valued.
  • Sharing our communion table with all who want to take part.
  • Creating safe spaces for recovery, healing, and learning as we watch strangers become family.
CREATIVITY /
  • Appreciating God as Creator of life, beauty, and enjoyment.
  • Welcoming diverse experiences for encountering and worshipping God.
  • Calling out God’s image in each other and restoring dignity through encouraging creative expression.
CELEBRATION /
  • Laughing, crying, and eating together.
  • Throwing parties, honoring courage and marking milestones, and cherishing annual traditions.
  • Celebrating God’s work in our lives, our community, the world.

OUR TEAMS

Since we started in 2006, the Refuge has always been community-led with men and women equally using their gifts in a variety of ways. Relationship and participation means more to us than programming and "excellence." We think the Kingdom of God is about everyone getting to play.

Our Serve and Sustain Team is a group of 7 men and women who nurture and support the life of our community together. They work alongside The Community Life Team, made up of ministry leaders who catalyze different areas of The Refuge, including:
  • Community Outreach
  • Refuge Cafe
  • Refuge Kids
  • Practical Needs
  • Single Moms
  • Social justice and Creation Care
  • Advocates
  • Finances
  • Recovery
  • Facilities
  • Contemplative Arts
  • Dinner Church
  • Refuge Reads
  • Book Pub, Yoga, and More
We are always praying for more people to lead and serve and be part of living out our dreams together.
